To say my blogging has been a bit erratic lately is . . . well, just stating the obvious. I have certainly been absent from this space. The theme of my life . . . has been upheaval. I have a lot to say/to blog about, but there have been some . . . let’s just call them “constraints.”
So let me catch you up real quick.
First, The Ankle.
It’s been 4 weeks since I sprained my ankle. I tried to make light of this, but . . . guys, it was a really quite bad sprain, and it’s only just now starting to feel actually better. Fortunately, I could walk on it from the moment it happened. Unfortunately, I couldn’t walk far or for long. But the bruising is finally gone and the swelling is going down . . . (more) slowly. I am up to walking a very slow mile with my very slow old dog. And I can get my foot into a shoe again. (Certain shoes, that is. I’m hoping to improve enough to wear a boot by the time the snow flies.) I’m at the healing stage where I feel deceptively strong and capable . . . until I overdo things and need to sit with a bag of ice on my elevated foot for a while again. This is not fun for me . . . because even though I like to sit and knit or sit and read, I am also an active person and all this sitting makes me itchy for Doing Stuff. (I do not make a good patient.) (Just ask Tom.) But things ARE getting better. I’m doing my PT and applying ice and elevating often. Sigh.
Next, The Home Reno.
Compared to . . . say remodeling the kitchen . . . having new flooring installed and painting a couple of rooms is a pretty quick renovation project, really. Just a couple of weeks, y’know? But . . . it’s the inconvenience of it all that kind of sucks the life out of you. (Especially when you’re also dealing with The Ankle, see above.) I really didn’t fully appreciate HOW MUCH I would miss having a functional desk to work at . . . or entirely losing my creative space . . . or not having full access to my dresser drawers (which were blocked by furniture we’d moved from other places) for over two weeks!!! It’s done now, though. My spaces are spiffy and shiny and fresh and new. I am slowly and oh-so-cautiously moving back into my spaces (because, you know . . . The Ankle) and I’m beginning to feel more settled again. Here are a couple of photos for you . . . of my work-in-progress on my new-and-improved art room/studio and my greatly-spiff-i-fied office.

The more these spaces come together, the better I feel! I’ll show more pics of the spaces (plus my new WILD dining room and front stairs carpet) when they’re all set up and the lighting is better (although we have entered the Winter Drear portion of the year now, and it is dark All The Time now).
Last, The Other Stuff.
Because, of course, Regular Life continues even when dealing with The Ankle and The Home Reno. So my available non-icing, non-elevating time has focused on . . . doing what I can in my garden to prepare for the dormant season, and shopping for a some new furniture for the now-vacant hole left by our piano, and communicating with IKEA (so much communicating) about a missing part for my new work table, and working shifts at the election, and yada yada yada. (Just yesterday it dawned on me that Thanksgiving is in three weeks!!! Hoo boy . . . )
So.
There you have it.
A quick catch-up on what’s been keeping me from blogging lately.
Things are settling down, though. For now. And ‘ll be back more regularly. Thanks for hanging in there with me!

I am also not a good patient and went a bit stir crazy during a recent health wobble. Adding the compromised mobility is just plain hard. Good that you are on the mend. I have new flooring in my creative spaces on the list but I know it will bring frustrations. Take care.
My orthopedist has said that a sprain can be worse than a break, and it sounds like you might agree. I’m glad things are getting better. Your new office and art room do look good so I’m glad that the new flooring re-do is also headed in the right direction. Here’s to an easy and simplified Thanksgiving!
What a relief your ankle is healing albeit slowly. If tendons were damaged that might explained a prolonged recovery (having been there). Your new office looks so comfortable and classy. Looking forward to seeing your new look. T-Day will make a nice dining room debut!
After I got new flooring and paint in my house, I couldn’t believe how much of a difference it made in the appearance and enjoyment of my space. There is nothing better than clean floors and walls! It has been very inspiring for me to reimagine what I want. Your spaces look great! I am looking forward to seeing your wild carpet since I am thinking of replacing my wool area rugs. As to the ankle, 2 of my friends are going through ankle issues, one with a break, one with a tendon tear. I have seen their pain and frustration for months, and I hope you get better soon, Kym. The immobility would drive me crazy, and during a home reno? My word! Take good care of that ankle and be as patient as you can. Sending all good vibes to you for healing.
I get it! The ankle: bones heal in 6 weeks, tendons 8-12 weeks…so yeah. (I’m still non-weight bearing, but finally can begin PT next week.)
Flooring: it’s like throwing everything you own up into the air, then watching it land. After that, trying to impose some sort of order on all of it. But, what a nice fresh start for the holidays and the new year. And your office and craft room look so inviting!
Yeah….the holidays, just imposed on my consciousness while trying to schedule PT. I think the guys are going to have to handle the Thanksgiving meal this year. I don’t think I have the reserves for that.
What a time! My husband’s need for an ankle replacement was probably due to a badly healed sprain from high school. Having been through the healing for the replacement surgery, I will never say “it’s just a sprain.”
I do think the last bit of healing is often the hardest — you feel well enough or healed enough to do things, until you don’t. Yet somehow life (or work, or the people around you, or even yourself) seems to begin treating you as if you’re 100% when you definitely are not. Hang in there!
And thank you for working in the election!
I’m glad to hear the reno project is done and that your ankle is improving. I know people will say it’s “just” a sprain, but sprains can be very bad and can take a long time to heal. Be sure that you’re taking things slowly. I know how frustrating it can be when you’re used to being really active, but you want to be sure you’re healed and strong when the snow and ice come around.
