Some knitters always have a sock on the needles. I guess I’m a knitter who always has a Sophie Scarf on the needles instead.
Actually, I wanted to try a “summer version” of my (now) beloved Sophie Scarf, so as I headed off to work at the election here yesterday, I grabbed a skein of Rowan’s Creative Linen ( a 50/50 linen/cotton mix) and my needles so I could start a little scarf during my (quite ample) downtime.
The photo above shows the sum total of my progress.
Which doesn’t actually reflect my downtime. Because I also did the NY Times crossword and read over half of the new Elizabeth Strout novel, The Things We Never Say, during my shift. (This was an election with only a school millage renewal and a somewhat notorious garbage ordinance on the ballot, so the turnout was pretty low – despite “garbage gate,” which translates to . . . a lot of downtime.)
I also did a lot of reflecting on . . . voting. And how important it is to do what we can to keep that right secure.
For all of us.
How about you? What are you working on these days?

Congratulations for being a good citizen, Kym. Election workers rock! My parents did this when I was a child, and I always got to go along – great fun! I am working on feeling better, reading light literature, focusing on house renovations for my stepson, and mourning Boomer. I had to put him to sleep last week, which really hit me hard. He was such a sweet little companion, a good boy in all the ways that count, and I miss him terribly. Since he was only here a year, I really feel a bit cheated, but it was a great year for both of us. No more dogs for me, I think, it was really hard to let go. Of course, I said that the last time I lost a dog as well.
I’m glad to see that there is a lovely Summer Sophie in the works and the yarn you chose sounds perfect! Our weather next week is predicted to be in the 40s and 60s and that seems like it might be a sweet spot for a Sophie. I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to vote on something a bit bigger than school millage and garbage-gate, but all elections are important!
Thank you for working at the election! It’s such an important service and as someone who values local government and the integrity of elections I truly appreciate that you do this. Your Summer Sophie is lovely. I still haven’t finished the one I started! I even took it with me when we were camping last month and I never got it out. I really like the new Elizabeth Strout, I hope you do, too.
Thanks for working the election! Any election is important and deserves attention from people. We have our mail-in ballots (been doing mail-in since the pandemic) and will drop them off prior to the election. I’m still not into the Sophie Scarf thing, but that one looks good and any Rowan yarn is a good one. What did you think of The Things We Never Say? Sometimes I am a Strout fan and other times not so much.
Thank you for being an election worker! I was surprised how much was on the ballot here, including a pretty crazy measure to increase money for roads by raising the gas tax AND tripling registration fees AND tripling some other type of car fee. I don’t think it has a chance of passing.
Garbage Gate has me intrigued… the result of a quick google make me think that there may be some vigilantes out there. I’m only guessing, haha!
That looks like another winner of a Sophie, and one that could be worn with just about anything!
That is a lovely start of a Sophie! I agree with. Vicki… that one can be worn with anything! And go you for working the polls… it is such a vital thing!
You certainly made the most of that down time!
How fun to have a summer version of the famous Sophie scarf. Thank you for working at the polls. The right to vote is so important.
I was an election worker for one election. I found it bracing and satisfying. Circumstances made it difficult to continue this work but I really recommend that every eligible (age, etc.) citizen try to become an election worker at least once – for themselves and for the country….By my rather low knitting standards I can think your Sophie Scarf is off to a roaring start.
Thanks for your election work, Kym. With the spring we are having, you will get to wear that summer scarf soon….I’ve been freezing this past week!
I worked our town election this week as well. We had a disappointing turnout with a significant school related issue on the ballot. No knitting these days…dodging puppy teeth. 🙂
We have mail in ballots here – at least we do for now. If we go back to in-person, I will investigate how to volunteer. I have yet to make a Sophie scarf but I have a flight coming up soon so 🤔
Thank you for doing the election worker duty! I do that here, sometimes it’s a real drag although it’s always good knitting time / local people watching. I am with you on the Sophie Scarf — I hear people be kind of sneer-y about them however I have two i wear all the time and I love your idea for a linen/cotton one! How is the book?
