Back in February, you might remember that I needed a knitting distraction while my black sweater was having a mid-knit block. So I made one of these fingerless mitts for myself. Just one . . . fully intending to knit the second before spring.
Well.
Last week I realized I was running out of “before spring” and decided to just get that second mitt finished. I wanted to have it done and out of the way . . . ready to wear in the fall. But, holy cow! I was really not in the mood to be knitting away on a fingerless mitt with mohair yarn after spending an afternoon working in the garden.
Like . . . I was REALLY Not In The Mood. But I perservered. And struggled through a very bad knitting attitude, paying the price with dropped stitches, losing at yarn chicken, ripping back (more than twice), and still ending up a few stitches short at bind off time! (Lesson learned: don’t knit something you’d really rather not be knitting.) (It all worked out in the end, but it was not pretty.)
Last weekend, I took the now-finished PAIR of mitts out for a photo shoot . . . while I was also weeding. I laid them down on the patio alongside my garden tools, and a certain song just popped right into my head. (If you’ve ever spent even just a little time watching Sesame Street, I’m sure you’ll guess where I’m going with this . . .)
One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn’t belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?
Well. We can play it right here on my blog, today!
Yep. One of these things is showing up in the totally WRONG season. So into the hats-and-mittens box they’ll go. For now. (But they ARE finished.) (So yay.)

Check out my Field Notes for project notes and details on the finished mitts.
They look lovely, even if they’re totally impractical and useless right now. But come chilly weather this fall, you’ll be glad you persevered. (And I fully believe that the easiest way to bring on warm weather is finishing up something completely useless for it — like me and my almost-finished sweater.)
Love the color! And very cosy having that longer cuff. I am always knitting out of season. So maybe that’s the excuse for my dropped stitches (yeah, sure:).
Oh, I am chuckling at that song! (It was a Top Ten Fav in our house!) Having a brand spanking new pair of cozy mitts ready to go for that first frosty fall morning walk… Future You will be thanking This You! (And what is it with going from early spring to Hello Summer in a nanosecond?)
The end result is quite nice despite trying to knit the mitts through a bad knitting attitude; just think how much future you will be able to enjoy nice warm hands in your lovely mohair mitts!
Mitts of wooly yarn do not belong in the garden (unless you’re just sitting there sipping a cup of tea). The mitts are cute and will serve you well in the fall!
I started singing the song in my head as soon as I saw this link at Kat’s!
I’m so over the hats + mittens box right now…but won’t it be nice to pull out something so lovely late next fall?
Oh dear. This reminds me that I knit a pair of mitts and had planned to do some yarn embroidery on them. Wonder where I put them?
LOL – when I saw the post title, I thought it was going to be about mitt #2 not matching mitt #1 … I’d say you’ve got a nice headstart on next fall with the mitts AND this spring with the rest of it. so yay!!
The mitts look lovely. But yes, to not knitting what one is not in the mood to knit. It doesn’t always end well.
