Pattern: Gnoel Gnome
Designer: Sarah Shira – Imagined Landscapes
Yarn: I used 5 shades of Rowan Felted Tweed I have leftover from other projects. Colors: Alabaster, Lotus Leaf, Avocado, Tawny, and Seasalter. I used far, far less than one skein of each color for the project.
Needles: US 3 and US 4; I mostly knit this project using Magic Loop, although did use double points for the futsy little bits.
Started/Finished: I cast on December 1 and finished the last bits on December 14.
Notes and Modifications: I knit exactly to the pattern directions for the gnome, with the exception of the color choices. (I used what I had available in my leftover stash of Rowan Felted Tweed, and referred to/followed Sarah’s excellent guidelines as I made my color choices.) Although I’ve knit several gnomes over the years, I have never knit any of Sarah’s gnome designs. Her instructions were excellent – clear and precise and easy to follow. And, yes. This gnome is a futsy little fellow to knit — but totally worth the trouble. I will say that the fair isle knitting on the hat and sweater was a real pain with such a small circumference. Certainly doable – and with charming results – but I’m comfortable and experienced with fair isle knitting. I know that I would have struggled if I were just starting out with this kind of color work, though, as the design is quite complex. (If I make another of these gnomes – and I may – I will just do freeform stripe patterns on the hat and sweater.) In the end, the gnome is super cute, and a fun addition to my winter/holiday decor.
My finished gnome stands 14 inches tall.
