Welcome back to the . . . Sanctuary . . . where once a week – on Fridays – I aim to preserve my sanity. And maybe yours, too. If you missed my inaugural Sanctuary post (the one where I explained all this), you can find it here.
So. What have I got for you this week?
Four(ish) things . . . Something to inspire and amaze you. Something to serve as a reminder to tend to your SELF. And a couple of somethings (that’s the four-ish part) to make you smile.
Ready?
=====
Something to inspire and amaze you . . .
Now I like to stitch, and I know my way around a sewing machine. AND I like to sketch in the wild. But until last week (when I discovered Harriet Riddell on Instagram), I would never, ever have thought to combine the two! Sewing machine. AND sketching in the wild. OR, I should clarify here . . . sketching in the wild WITH a sewing machine . . .
What?
Yeah. Check out this quick video (3 minutes) from the BBC featuring the amazing work of Harriet Riddell . . .
Wow, huh?
If you’d like to see more of Harriet’s work, or watch her in action in real time (there are many cool videos), you can visit her website — or follow her on Instagram.

Something to serve as a reminder for you . . . to tend your SELF
Leave it to Kate Bowler to remind us that caring smaller doesn’t mean caring less. If you’re having a day (or more than a day) of overwhelm and “general slumpiness,” give yourself permission to tend to yourself. Y’know . . . so you can tend to other things another day.
==========
(Two) Something(s) to make you smile . . .
First, a little meme I saw last week on Instagram. It made me, well . . . actually snort out loud. Because . . . yeah. True that.
And then . . . something else I saw on Instagram last week. It’s really too good not to share. I hope it sends you on your way to an easy-going weekend, whether you’re planning a “girls trip” or not!

And that’s it for this week. I hope you found some sanctuary here today.
At least for a few minutes.
Enjoy the weekend!
Find some joy. Protect your peace.
Sewing machine and thread as a medium – that is amazing. I think we are all stronger in the broken places, and about now I am sure I must look like a crazed vessel, Kym. Thanks for the sanctuary, Kym. I hope your weekend is filled with wonder and peace.
Harriet Riddell is really something, from her outdoor, bicycle-powered sewing machine to her creations themselves. She makes it look easy, but I know it’s not! I can care a little more today, mainly because the new Pope has made reading the news slightly less fraught (but I also haven’t yet approached the news yet today). I will keep caring smaller in mind.
Even without Kate’s suggestion, I have been caring smaller these days… it is all I can handle right now, and that is very okay! But those girls with the wine… LOVE! And yeah, I am so done with going through the things that don’t kill me. So done!
Happy Mother’s Day and have a great weekend!
What a nice bunch of things to wake up to this morning – the inspiration of Harriet Riddell, Kate Bowler’s wisdom (and it’s really good advice), a meme that made me nod in recognition and another that made me laugh out loud — the best part, their cheers at the end!
Forgot to add — thanks <3
yay for Friday afternoon chortles – thanks, Kym!
LOL – the wine bottle? Reminds me so much of my friends and me. perfect. Harriett Riddell – amazing stuff!! And yes, smaller, can be so much better! Happy Mother’s Day Kym – hope your weekend is fabulous!
Kate Bowler is such a joy of a human being. And those last two made me snort, which I definitely needed!
Happy weekend and happy Mother’s Day!
Off to the NH Sheep and Wool show today…may need some nice drapey yarn for that nice shawl you showed us. Sanctuary never fails to make the day better. Thanks Kym and Happy Mother’s Day yo you. xo
There’s so much to smile about in this post! The sewing machine art, the idea of caring smaller, the exhaustion of living in today’s times, and the silly joy of that wine/cup game. Love it all!
For some reason, my computer really scrambled the photos and videos in your post. I do love the meme though about not wanting to go through anymore things that make me stronger. So true indeed.
And when I scrolled back up, all of it loaded correctly. Who knows the mysteries of the web?!
