It’s late February, where here in the Great Lakes region we are experiencing the Whiplash Season . . . that Great Thaw-Freeze Dance. After having a lot of snow on the ground (since Thanksgiving weekend, I’ll add), we got a massive 3-day thaw and a taste (but just a taste) of Spring. But now, of course, the seasonal pendulum has swung and it is very cold and snowing every day again. This is the part of winter when we just need to . . . grit our teeth and get through it. (Because this part lasts for months. And has just started.)
Here’s what that looks like . . . from my camera roll.

I see some bits of sunshine scattered in those pictures… and that is a boon any day! My yard has a bit more than a dusting of snow right now, but the sun is shining brightly on it… and yes, it looks gorgeous out! (although 16 degrees for our walk this morning made it short!)
I am a true southern girl, so I don’t envy you having that weather! I went to college for a year in Iowa, and it was the worst weather year of my life. It wasn’t just the extreme cold, but the sameness of it, as you elude to in your post. Then came the mud! I think you have mastered the art of bring color and warmth into your home during these months, Kym. Your amaryllises are gorgeous, and your home looks very welcoming. Here’s hoping for an early spring!
Gorgeous amaryllis. Whoa… that optical illusion room!! Makes me a little dizzy!
At least you’ve got plenty of beautiful amaryllis and libations to help while you’re gritting your teeth and getting through!
It’s definitely grin and bear it time! I often see my first crocus by the end of February but that won’t be happening this year. Amaryllis flowers help. Houseplants, too.
We’ve experienced that same brief tease of spring, which fortunately lasted long enough to melt most of the remaining snow from that big late January storm. We’ve gotten more snow this week, but the sun has been coming out and melting a lot of it — and certainly that sunlight helps my mood a lot. Enjoy those gorgeous amaryllis blooms. Here’s hoping they stick around until you’ve got some flowers outside, too!
JoJo in the snow!! And Amaryllis!! Lovely pictures Kym. We had a bit more snow overnight – enough that I need to clear the car before I can get over to watch Iris. Oh Well…Spring is on the way.
JoJo and Booney live similar days. 🙂 It looks like you’re making the best of winter!
Beautiful photos Kym. I made a note in my calendar to look for those peppermint striped amaryllis bulbs next year. Hooray for a little bit of sunshine too.
