. . . that big old woolly man sweater is finished! And here’s my favorite knitwear model (above). . . showing off his best “blue steel” look . . . in his new fishing sweater.
It’s been a bit of a trial, actually. When all is said and done. (Key word here being . . . DONE.) I intentionally sized up (because I wanted the finished sweater to be easily layer-able). But I needn’t have. (In retrospect, I probably should have sized DOWN.) And then . . . I had to intentionally shrink the finished sweater (without felting it!) to get it down to a wearable size. (And it’s still overly large.)
Really . . . it’s been a TRIAL, I tell you.
I could go on and on about how I happened to knit a bigger sweater than I needed to, but we’ll just let it go. Tom is happy with his new (very oversized) sweater. It’s warm. It’s cozy. And it will be a perfect fishing sweater.
And, really. Wasn’t that my original goal?
You can read all about it – and see more photos – here in my Field Notes. I’ve also updated my Ravelry page to include this project (with the very same information – but fewer photos – as you’ll find in my Field Notes).

How about you? What are you making this week?

It looks terrific on him and I think you did a marvelous job of making just what he wanted even if the way you got there was less than idea. Kudos to you! What’s next on the needles? Small and quick projects, I’m guessing.
Congratulations on your finish! This is partly why I don’t knit sweaters, but like Carole said, you did a wonderful job of making what Tom wanted. It’s not too tight or encumbering so he can easily cast in it, and it’s still good for layering. I say well done, you! That washing and drying would have been quite scary for me. It’s a shame NY and Paris Fashion Weeks are over for this year, but surely Tom will be invited to serve as a model (for all the fishing sweaters that they showcase) next year.
The BIG sweater looks great! The fit looks roomy, but if he put a couple of teeshirts or like layers on it would be about perfect. The size isn’t too big to be wearable. Overall, I think the sweater is fabulous!
I think this is a definite win, and it’s a very good-looking sweater. Of course, the model may be influencing that! I find most men love an oversized sweater, and I think it will be perfect for fishing. I have put many sweaters that I have knit in the washing machine and dryer. It just means you have to wash it very carefully so it doesn’t felt, and dry it carefully, checking often for size. I have also done that with bought sweaters that have lost their shape. Either I am fearless or careless, but so far it has worked for me. I bet Tom loves his sweater.
First, major props to Tom for playing along with the photo shoot — Zoolander has nothing on him! I can see that it’s oversized, and while it wasn’t necessarily your intention, I think if Tom is happy with it you can put it down as a win. He can easily wear it over several other shirts, and the positive ease will allow for pockets of air to create more insulation, so he’ll stay warmer. Most of all, it’s done!
Great sweater! Fabulous modeling! Congratulations on finishing it. I am nearly done with a sweater for Chuck — now that we’re home (we’ve been traveling) I need to finish it. The knitting is done. I even sewed it up. BUT I have had lots of trouble with sizing and my current job is to take 3 inches from the length. Ugh.
Itl ooks great!
Still chugging away on my Giddy Up. Same construction. The neck sits right in the middle of my not so lovely neck and I was considering a fold! Hoping I can pull it off. Great sweater on a top shelf model!
Better roomy than throat strangling, right? He loves it! That was the goal, right? Looks like a win to me! And now you can buy him a nice thick flannel shirt to layer underneath it, on those especially freezing days. Love the color, too!
What a fabulous finish Kym! I love it (the color, the style, everything). And Tom is such a great model! The sweater looks roomy but not really too over-sized to me. And with a few tees underneath on those cold/damp fishing mornings he will be warm. Well Done YOU!!!
Congratulations on finishing that man-sized fishing sweater. It looks like it is just perfect for outdoor (and indoor winter days) activities. It does sound like it was more of a trial than you needed. But the sweater is finished. Three cheers.
A finish is a finish! It looks great, he obviously loves it… WIN!!
