Here we are, mid-September. It’s the time of year I call the “September Slide.” It’s not quite summer. And it’s not quite fall. But you can feel the slide . . . from one season into the next, can’t you? My garden is still blooming and bearing fruit, but also looking quite ragged. My days are still relaxed and carefree, but I’m starting to feel the “structure” and “routine” of Not Summer creeping back into my life. The sunsets are still brilliant, but they’re happening so early!
You can see the September Slide happening right here in my camera roll . . .
(And, yeah. After having a piano in our living room for 30 years, it’s gone . . . leaving only a very dusty footprint. Both kids took piano lessons; Erin studied piano all the way through high school. But now that they’re grown and gone, the piano just . . . sat there, untouched. We finally found a young family and off it went . . . ready to brighten the lives of new piano kids!) (Am I melancholy? A little. But mostly I’m excited about filling that space with something different!)

Your garden is still lovely! And that’s a great photo of Tom. I played piano all through my life, starting with lessons when I was 9. I played in college in the practice rooms. And I played at home for many years. But, eventually, I only played on Christmas Eve and that piano took up some valuable real estate. We found a family with 2 young boys who wanted to play and they took it away. I still miss it sometimes but it was the right choice.
Curious what you decide to do with that piano space. It must feel a little forlorn. An over-50 friend decided to learn to play the piano during the Covid shutdown. I always thought what a brilliant use of that time.
It may be September but your garden looks lush and lovely. Jojo knows just the right spot to stay cool and calm. Congrats on learning to let go. It’s not easy to see that empty spot, but I know you’ll find just the right thing to fill that space. I’m a little creeped out by the hornworm (we have nothing like it!). And, my hands look a little bit like yours as I’ve been filling fountain pens this week! LOL The shawl is simply pretty and looks like it’s at the ready to cover you when the evening chill moves in.
Two comments that highlight the differences in lives. I am 75, studied piano for several years when I was young, and then pipe organ, and of course I gave it all up when I was in high school and traded my piano for a stereo. (My mother gave me a choice.) I would give anything to have a piano, I just struggle with finding the right one. I have plenty of space to put it in my living room. I could doodle on that thing all day. And secondly, it is still 100 degrees here daily and has been since the first of September. I am so ready for the September slide. Your pictures are wonderful, Kym!
I love JoJo in the hostas! Hooray for autumn clematis, sunsets, and hydrangeas, and I’m a big fan of empty space created by passing on something you no longer use. Tomato hornworms are not nice, but having parasitic wasp eggs laid on you doesn’t sound great, either.
