You know what’s really nice about knitting for a new baby on the way? You get plenty of notice! (And if you make your sweater to fit a baby as it grows, well. You’ve just bought yourself a couple of extra months.)
So this one? Well. It’s right on time in terms of gifting. But there’s going to be plenty of time before it’s ready for wearing! And, really, that’s usually my strategy for baby sweater knitting. I project into the future, size-wise, for when the baby might be needing a warm sweater . . . and I knit for THAT size baby.
Anyway. The baby has arrived. And the sweater is ready for her . . . whenever she grows into it.
I also created this cute little “tag,” complete with sweater information and care instructions. (All that fodder comes in handy, y’know?)
If you’d like to see more photos and read all the details about the more technical aspects of the knitting, you can check my Field Notes.

How about you? What are you working on this week?
What a sweet, sweet little sweater Kym (and I love the tag you made to go with it). I’m knitting a sock (as usual) but also started a new shawl which is a fun knit. And…The Ministry of Time came in for me at my library, so I’ve started that! (and, so far, am enjoying it quite a bit)
Oh Kym! I don’t know what is cuter… the sweater or that darling tag!! What a treasure for that baby! I am saving that sweater… it is really so cute!
The care tag is the icing on the adorable sweater cake. Just perfect!
I’ve put this sweater on my Ravelry favorites list. Sweet little sweater! I’m knitting on the Carrie Bradshaw Everyday Shawl. I’ve had a shawl in my car for when the AC is to drafty and the one I had in there got misplaced. This is going to be my new AC shawl.
That is a lovely baby sweater! The colors and stripes are perfect and I really love the buttons you chose.
Such a sweet sweater – but your TAG! I always send instructions with a gift, but your beautiful tag begs to be kept, which will be helpful.
Oh wow. I think I love your tag even more than the sweater!! Wonderful, Kym!!
what a sweet, sweet gift – and the tag, too! That baby is going to be wrapped in a warm hug come winter.
Wonderful sweater but OH THAT TAG
That is a beautiful sweater and the tag is the perfect whimsical touch! Brava to you on the whole thing!
That turned out perfectly! And I love your tag — it really adds such a lovely touch! I’m like you: I always craft a larger size based upon when the baby will need a warm garment. Plus they grow so quickly at the beginning that I’d hate to spend a lot of time on something they’ll grow out of right away. The exception is babies who are closely related to me, but usually for them I’ll make multiple items in different sizes.
Love it!
That little sweater is perfection. It is darling and I like the little color detail around the hems of the sleeves and the body. Your care tag is a great idea. I include that information in a note or card but a tag on the sweater seems less likely to get lost.
So cute!! And a beautiful color combo. Lucky new mom. Lucky new baby. I agree about those buttons! Chloe
What a lovely baby sweater and that tag makes it extra special!
