I told you I’d pop back in from time to time . . . and I’m back today to (finally) share the test-knit sweater I made for Elizabeth Smith’s new pattern release, The Downbeat.
When Elizabeth asked me if I might be interested in the test knit, I knew I didn’t really have time. (Because I was nearing the end of Tom’s big woolly man sweater and committed to finishing it.) But once I saw Elizabeth’s new design, I couldn’t help myself. Because a highly-customizable raglan pullover with Elizabeth’s excellent attention to fit-and-finishing details is absolutely . . . right up my alley.
So I bit.
And I am completely smitten with the results.
I went off-script a bit (with Elizabeth’s blessing; she intends for this to be blank-canvas type of pattern) and used this beloved favorite (commercially-produced) sweater as my fit template.
This is a fantastic – and easy to modify – pullover sweater pattern. Clear instructions. Great fit details. Built-in tutorials. All of the things that make Elizabeth’s patterns enjoyable to knit . . . with great results.
I’m already busy scheming up new plans for future sweaters. Because, really. Right up my alley!
If you want more details about my sweater – and more photos – you can find them here in my Field Notes. I also updated my Ravelry page to include this project. (I am woefully behind on my Ravelry updates otherwise, and much prefer my own Field Notes. Just sayin.)

How about YOU? What are you making this week?

LOVE!! What a perfect pairing of yarn and pattern! It looks brilliant on you as well! It does look like an infinitely knit able (over and over) pattern! I can’t wait to see what you make next! XO
I love it, Kym. Looks like a sweater that you could throw on every day and be so cozy. I will have to investigate this pattern. BTW, I have to say that I neglected to buy this colorway before Jared quit making Shelter yarns, and now I cannot find a dupe of it anywhere. It’s a great example of a staple garment, great color, great design.
Clever name for a lovely sweater! It does fit perfectly and looks quite cozy. Enjoy!
What a great sweater! And a great use for the marled yarn. I love the modeled pictures!
It looks like the perfect wear-everywhere sweater — the fit of a favorite sweatshirt with the class of a structured garment. And it looks fabulous on you!
That’s a perfect sweater for you and I’m glad you’re so happy with it! I bet you’ll be reaching for it over and over during the upcoming season.
So fabulous, Kym! I love a “blank canvas” design … once I find a sweater that fits just right, I like to knit it again (and again), and switching up yarns and body/sleeve length help (a bit anyway) make each sweater unique. I’m knitting on the last few lace repeats for shawl … and planning to get back to that black vest by the weekend. Happy knitting!
Wonderful sweater Kym. Love it! I bet you wear the heck out of it in no time. I’m curious about what color you might knit the next one in (I do love the B&W though).
What a great wearable sweater. It’s a win. I imagine that sweater will get a lot of wear. It looks very comfy but you could sure dress it up with some black slacks or a black skirt. I’ve not heard of that designer so now I’m off to look at her patterns.
Beautiful sweater! I love the mods you made and The Downbeat is beautiful! (I also love your link to your EF sweater – I swear: a half dozen pieces of her clothing along w a lot of denim and fleece for daily wear – are my entire wardrobe!) 😃
Your sweater looks great!
Love your sweater and your haircut even more! It fits you perfectly! I’m an Elizabeth Smith fan, too. Enjoyed knitting the low-key vest until I ran into a bit of a roadblock (not the pattern’s fault!) and that plus gaining about 10 pounds has put it into the naughty corner for awhile. Hope to remedy both situations. Have about 3 or 4 balls/skeins of BT too little for a sweater, maybe a very cropped vest (over a shirt!) or a cowl. This little stash is a precious commodity (she said smugly)😊. Thanks for coming back on to share!
THEY fit you perfectly!🙄
This does look like a comfy sweater. I do wish I could find a fingering weight, raglan sweater pattern. Until then, I will be starting a new color work project very soon.
Perfect! And a great color. Still chugging away on my sweater…Jeopardy and one hour of tv each week night will get this thing done! 🙂
