Once January gets rolling, I think it’s fun to play with my new word. I like to get things started by . . . just kinda getting used to what the word means, and how it gets used in our everyday language. I look for quotes and poems and images and songs that relate to my word. I try to understand why the word appealed to me in the first place (but that generally that takes a while for me to figure out).
As for my new word – SPACE? Well, I don’t remember ever having a word that was used so broadly in the general lexicon! After looking up the dictionary definition (which was not as long as I thought it might be, although still pretty long), I started playing around, coming up with phrases that had the word “space” in them. Here’s some of what I came up with . . .
I mean, “space” covers a lot of ground when it comes to everyday use! We’ve got everything from “parking space” and “hyper space” to “outer space,” “space between,” and the good old “I need space.”
It comes down to this: wide open space(s).
That’s what I’ve got this year!
Seems that I can go . . . almost anywhere with this word.
But I’ve got to start somewhere. So for my purposes (at least to begin with) I’m going to use the following definition (which was buried deep down in the dictionary list of SPACE definitions) as my starting point :
SPACE: The freedom and scope to live, think, and develop in a way that suits one.
Yep. That’s the one.
A good place to start.
I’ll be . . . looking for space. And giving myself some space while I do it!
C’mon along. It might be interesting.
The opportunity that this word provides… I love your creative “Space Cloud” 🙂
I am so very excited to see where space takes you! XO
I love your starting point. Freedom is a big thing with me. But just to mess with your mind (by adding another facet to the word): you forgot “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I never saw the movie, but there must be something to work with in there. Looking forward to your SPACE journey, Kym, wherever it takes you! Chloe
That is a pretty good definition and not one that would have come immediately to my mind. I’m looking forward to seeing where you go in space this year.
I love how you mapped out your word. Sounds like this word has so much space for exploring and playing.
I looked at all those spaces and “negative” space appealed to me. I need to think that one out. Hmmmmmmmmm….
As I was reading your word cloud I thought about “space to grow” and “space to be yourself” and then I read your definition. I think you have a great starting point for a year of exploring space!
Oh, man. That IS a good place to start! And not just a good place to start–but to BE!
What a great definition and what a wonderful place to start. And…Space ODDITY!!!!! Love that.
Your world cloud looks like it was a lot of fun to put together; I’m not sure I realized just how many other words and phrases go with space! I think starting with a definition that focuses on freedom sounds like a good one, and I look forward to seeing where it takes you!
I love a One Little Word that has so many different definitions and uses. That was very much my experience with both Open and Practice. I think you are off to a fantastic start with Space!
I’m in! And I’ll sing Wide Open Spaces loud and proud in your honor the next time I hear it!
The dictionary definition is where I begin also. I like to include the history of the word. I like the one you chose. Where will this wide open space take you in 2023? I predict it will be a great ride.
You’ve got a whole universe to explore!
oh I LOVE it – and (thanks to Margene for the prompt!) looking forward to a bit of vicarious universe exploring with you this year! (also, I JUST realized that my typical “pay attention” phase with my OLW was a lot different this year … I noticed season(s) at play in the real world, and almost not at all as a word – if that makes sense?)
