Oh, it has been a busy time in the garden.
Plenty of tales.
Some good. Some not so good. Most just . . . interesting.
So today, rather than a boring and wordy update that you really don’t care about anyway (unless, like me, you’re a gardening nerd) (proof of “gardening nerd-hood” on full display here with the hat), I’ll keep it brief and bring you up to date with a photo gallery.
What you’ll see in the photo gallery: The dogwood really has been the standout stunner in the garden this year! Blooming plants (some – like the wisteria and the baptisia – already done for the year; some like the water hyacinth fleeting but wonderful). Munched hostas and the return of the parking lot flags. (Yes. The deer are back.) (Or were . . . until the return of the parking lot flags.) My herb garden. Sedum growing in the patio cement under my rain barrel. JoJo, Faithful Garden Companion. Ponds. General scenes from my garden. Weeds.
What you won’t see in the photo gallery: The ground cover battleground (I’m waging war; the groundcover is winning). The huge volunteer cherry tree with the split trunk in the front pine tree grove that must be taken out next week. The still-there-but-much-smaller mulch pile waiting to be spread. The thistles I must pull this week . . . or else. The dead bunny I found.
And there you have it. Tales from the garden . . . early June edition.
I think lots of extra superlatives in my comment might clutter it up, so I’ll just say it is all beautifully wonderful (except the poor dead bunny)!
Ahhhhh… a deep sigh of delight here! (and what is it with the thistles this year??? And the creeping vine-y crap that is trying to overtake everything?? Thank goodness I got that weeding playlist done!)
It looks so green, lush, and inviting! Gosh I’d love to sit on your patio (with my back to the house) and just enjoy the views!!
It’s all so beautiful and lush! So different from our Deep South gardens.
I love the idea of the flag strips. Glad to here they help.
Phew! A lot of work there with lovely results.
Any suggestions for dealing with a slug fest we are currently dealing with?
I’m here for all the garden tales, good and bad, but that’s not a surprise to you I’m sure. Sorry about the dead bunny. We had a dead vole in the garden yesterday. And, in super exciting news, my first dahlia has popped up! I was very late in planting them so I’m very happy to see this progress!
My Asian dogwood only had two blooms this year. The clematis opened today and, best news, ALL of the new hydrangeas we put in back in the fall survived the winter and are either blooming or have buds ready to go.
Your garden is lovely. I wish we all were closer and on a cool, breezy day could sit and knit together. THAT would be epic.
Dead bunny 🙁
Oh, what are those triangle shaped flags I see? I am looking to add some whimsy to my garden😉
So lush! I love the dogwood. Such healthy pink-tinged petals. And the deep green I see must have a psychologically cooling effect. You deserve every refreshing cocktail, heartwarming glass of wine and ice cold stein of beer while gazing out at all that beauty. We inherited sturdy azaleas, hostas, day lilies and more which lasted for decades, despite years of steady and blithe neglect. By the time things started to get bedraggled our time there was up (new horizons) and our property fell victim to McMansionism. Hold on tight as long as you can! (Love the hat and the orange thingy that looks sorta like a stitch marker. RIP little bunny!)
It looks amazing! You have my sympathy about the munched hostas; in my case, it’s the bunnies eating them (though we had more deer on our street earlier in the week, so they might be taking a bite, too). I wonder if flags or pinwheels or other moving things might deter the bunnies? Always happy to see Gardener JoJo on duty!
What a gorgeous garden and a beautiful gardener. And I mean you although JoJo is definitely the first runner up.
