Just a little reminder . . . Book discussion day for our most recent Read With Us selection, The Shipping News, is coming right up — two weeks from today . . . Tuesday, March 21.
Don’t worry if you haven’t started reading yet, because you still have plenty of time to read along. (And Kat mentioned yesterday that it’s available on Hoopla right now.)
Or . . .
You can also watch the movie version of The Shipping News, starring Kevin Spacey (yeah, I know), Judi Dench, Julianne Moore, and Cate Blanchett. The movie was panned by critics when it first came out, but it’s not terrible. There are some differences from the novel (as always), but it’s pretty faithful to the story — and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. (Worth watching for that alone, actually.)
Unfortunately, the movie isn’t available on any of the more common streaming services right now, but it is available to rent for $3.99 on Amazon Prime or iTunes. ($3.99 isn’t bad for a movie . . . although I wish I could tell you it was free.)
Take a look at the trailer . . . and . . . happy reading – or even watching – with us!
I got the DVD of the movie from the library just to remind myself of the story, and while I liked the movie overall, I have definite thoughts about Kevin Spacey as Quoyle. The scenery, background music, handknit sweaters, and that great scene of moving the house are all worthwhile. Now I’m re-reading the book to get those awful images of Kevin Spacey as Quoyle out of my head!
I hope to watch the movie again before our discussion. Not this week, though, because this week is all about Oscar prep! I’m late to the party but determined.
I don’t think I actually ever saw the movie, though I had the tie-in paperback copy of the book the first time I read it, and I definitely picture the aunt as Judi Dench! Casting Kevin Spacey as Quoyle was a bad move; I’m not sure who I’d cast instead, though. I’ve got less than 100 pages left to read and am looking forward to our discussion!
I look forward to re-reading this soon, but I’m sad that I won’t be able to make the discussion this month. I’m part of a group that helps people with rent & utilities and our spring fundraiser is that night.
I am planning on settling in with some knitting and watch The Shipping News tomorrow! And I am very excited to discuss Quoyle and all the KNOTS! 🙂
