I don’t know about the weather where you are, but here? Spring . . . has left the building!
It is so cold and so windy and so gloomy that I don’t even mind knitting on a big old woolly man-sweater these days! As you can see, I’m nearly to the shoulder decreases on the new fishing sweater I’m knitting for Tom. The BACK of the sweater, that is. I’m clipping right along here, knitting through the doldrums, and I may even have the back completed by the end of the week.
This won’t be my monogamous summer knitting project, though. (Too. Hot. For. That.) Although I’ll have it handy whenever the weather takes a walk on the chilly side again. (As it does.)
In the meantime, I’ve got a new project in the planning stages. It’s time for me to make another baby sweater . . . for another grandniece, due in July. (I’ve made a baby sweater for each of our grandnieces and nephews – 8 so far! – so I can’t stop now.) I’m still in the planning stages for the sweater, but I’m inviting you all along to join me in the “deciding” phase of things.
I’ve pretty much settled on making this little sweater. (Click on the photo for the Ravelry link. Bonus: It’s a freebie.) I love fun stripes and creative color blocking, so this pattern is right up my alley. This particular baby will be the third in this grandnephew’s family — and the first girl. Although I always used to make tiny-baby sized sweaters as gifts, I tend to favor older-baby sized sweaters these days, so this baby won’t be wearing this sweater right away. (I’ll be making the 12 months size.)
I don’t want to purchase any yarn for this project, so I’ve been Shopping-My-Stash. Turns out I don’t have a lot of superwash wool on hand — but I was able to come up with two colorway possibilities. (The pattern calls for a minimum of 3 colors, but I’ll probably throw in a fourth . . . just for extra color blocking fun.)
So . . . I’ve got Option 1 (the magenta-navy-creamy white-acid green combo) and Option 2 (the more muted pink-yellow-creamy white-turquoise combo).
I’ve pretty much made up my mind already . . . but why don’t you weigh in here, too. Just for the fun of it!
Which color combo do you prefer?
And which one would you guess I’m leaning toward?
(And I know the lighting in these photos is terrible. Best I could do. Doldrums. With heavy rain. All day. For days.)
You sure are moving along on Tom’s sweater. I guess that says something positive about un-Spring-like weather! I really like the color of the yarn you are using for that. That striped, color-blocked sweater is adorable and both of your color options for it look wonderful. Personally, I would lean toward Option 1…but I might be inclined to make two of them! LOL. It is grey and damp here and we are expecting rain to start any time today and continue into Friday! And chilly!!
We are having much the same chilly weather here this week (which I am kind of glad to be having… it is extending the bloom time for my alliums and I will take it!) What fun to welcome a new baby to your extended family!! I really like both color options you have pulled together… but I simply love Option One! You had me at acid green! Haha! Stay warm… and knit on my friend! XO
I thought maybe we were having a cool weather week so Kat could wear her Swirly vest, and I see it’s also west to MI so you can work on Tom’s sweater. It’s looking good! As for the baby sweater choices, I would definitely pick Option 1. I really like those colors together and will look forward to (maybe) seeing how you use them in the sweater. I predict that Option 1 is the one you’re leaning towards, too.
I’m on the side of Option One and I think that might be your choice, too. But, either option will make a sweater any baby and her mom would love.
It was cold here (and gray) the last couple of weeks, but it is warming up and spring arrived enough yesterday that I cleaned up my patio. This week will be planting week. Hope this weather will be yours soon!
Well it all depends on the coloring of the baby, but not knowing that, my eyes immediately jump to No. 1, because I love strong deep colors. Although barring personal preference the other is also beautiful. That designer also designs free adorable American Girl clothes in case any of your grandnieces is a fan. After slogging away on an eternal DK weight stockinette baby blanket, i found it much more bearable with an audiobook. My go to companion is usually a knitting podcast but I found a book more effective in this case. Your trials with that man-sweater is pushing/inspiring me to finally start a man-vest for my husband. Mercifully, he doesn’t like sleeves on his woolly items. Can’t wait to see your Gingersnap.
I am drawn to the first combo, but if it’s the first girl after boys, using pink might be appealing to the parents – more girly, you know? And I agree with Chloe in thinking about the possible coloring of the baby. Deeper richer, colors, or the softer medium tones? I think you also are drawn to combo one, partly because you’ve used the colors before, I’m guessing, or at least wound the yarn 😉
While reading the comments, I kept thinking I must be the only one drawn to pink until I saw the one-and-only pink vote — so far. As the mother of 3 sons, I always had to look for opportunities to knit in pink.
As for the weather, the last couple of days here have been horribly windy. Sure has delayed my gardening efforts. But I keep reminding myself that it’s foolish to plant anything in Cheyenne before Memorial Day. I’m sure you remember. 😉
OK, I am going to go against the tide on this one. If I was knitting it for an adult, especially me, I would go for option #1. I love acid green, purple and blue together. I have this in my mind for a sweater for a while, but have not found the pattern I want. But for a 12 month old, I would knit option#2. My rationale is that it will go with more kids clothes, not match the vomit that kids have (HA!), and probably go with a baby’s complexion better. Either would be fabulous!
I like the first combo better — but I always am in favor of saturated colors for babies because I’m so over the pastels thing! I’m in agreement with you on knitting up a larger size. The little things are so cute, but they outgrow them so fast! Plus, so many people give tiny clothes as gifts. I love the idea of new parents getting something for later on, so it’s like opening up a gift many months later.
Ugh, the weather is AWFUL! Thankfully, after today, it looks like things will be drying up & warming up!!
I’m normally drawn toward bolder colors, but I really like that more muted combo. Either will be amazing, though, of course!!
March weather here in Boston! I really like the first combo.
I like both combos but as I’m not an acid green fan I’d go with option 2.
Option one! It actually hit 90 at my house yesterday, but today it’s a very pleasant, low humidity, breezy 77 – I’m sending those sunshine blue sky wishes your way.
Option one is my favorite, but option two is nice. Weather in Illinois is cool, gray, with so much rain! I’m headed to Holland, MI to visit my sister next week & we both hope for better weather!
I am curious about the green yarn on the right side of he sweater. And I think option one is lovely
I started swatching for Dale’s sweater yesterday. I figure a gloomy weekend in the camper might be just the right time to start a nice wool sweater. Of course I’ll have Fred and George in tight quarters to contend with so this may not work out. I like option two slightly better but I’m guessing you’ve picked option one. Either way it’s going to be an adorable and colorful sweater for this first girl baby!
