Remember that song? Incense and Peppermints . . . a silly little song I loved as a child . . .
Beatniks and politics, nothin’ is newA yardstick for lunatics, one point of viewWho cares what games we chooseLittle to win, but nothing to lose
(Those lyrics! Some things never change, huh?)
Anyway. Last spring, I cast on for this Musselburgh hat. I’ve been lugging it around as my just-in-case, mindless knitting project for months, with very little progress to show. Finally, over the holidays, I got tired of it rolling around in the bottom of my knitting bag . . . and I decided to just finish it!
It would’ve been a quicker finish, but I was confident that I knew how the crown decreases worked. So, y’know . . . I didn’t need to consult the pattern.
(Sigh.)
(Talk about some things never changing. . . )
I finished just in time for the “bomb cyclone” to hit Michigan last weekend. I didn’t even block the thing. I just stuck it on my head and went out to fill those bird feeders!
I haven’t posted this to Ravelry, and I’m not sure I’m going to, actually. But I did put all the details – and a few more photos – in my Field Notes, if you’re interested.
Have you knit a Musselburgh? I think this is my fourth. And I’ll probably cast on for another one soon. (Something has to live at the bottom of my knitting bag!)

How about you? What are you making these days?
I love that song! And the hat ❤️ I have just cast on my 5th Musselburgh hat. So far the have all been gifts. This one might be for me.😊
I don’t think I know the song, but I love that hat and that yarn – purple looks great on you! – and the pattern. I’ve only knit one! and this post reminds me that – at least once I get past the fiddle-y beginning – it is a great project for the in-between times (you know, like when I’m waiting for an in-progress sweater blocking to dry?!)
Thinking of trying a color work project – not sure if I’m chart minded or not these days. Love the Musselburgh…maybe I should try one of those…I do have a plane ride ahead!
Great song and great hat! Love the purple. I have yet to knit a Musselburgh…keep saying I’m going to and then I don’t. If I can get one started, it would b a nice project to work on when I meet up with Dee (not too much concentration needed…).
The song immediately started playing in my mind as soon as I saw the title. (Thanks for the Strawberry Alarm Clock earworm!) Your Musselburgh looks great and you finished it at quite an opportune time. I’ll be wearing mine when I head out to do some errands today. I’d like to make another one but I kind of dread that fiddly start.
The Musselburgh looks cozy. Well, if you can actually get cozy in the temps you are having.
Great hat! Love the color. It looks cozy and warm! I’m knitting the lining on the second mitten to go in a basket for a silent auction as a fund raiser for a relative with cancer. Stranded mittens and hat and a few cute Christmas ornaments. I hope people appreciate the work that goes into them and the cost of the yarn. If they don’t it would have been better to give money instead…
Love that hat and I have only made one but thinking about casting on another one in the future.
I love it! Don’t so much love how much we need double-thickness hats right now, but it will pass eventually. I have yet to make a Musselburgh, but then I have my own designed version of it and have knit a bunch of those. And really this type of hat is the best mindless project.
That’s really cute, Kym! I am currently knitting Musselburgh #2 and plan to knit a 3rd — or maybe use Sarah’s version (I think her pattern is already in my library). I use Gauged Dyeworks self-striping yarn for the entertainment factor. 😉
Thanks for the song earworm! The hat looks great on you, even if you do look pretty miserable in that cold!
I only have one knitting project in the active works and I think it needs a friend.
I don’t know this song but I love the hair especially the wave styled it on the post with the snow. It looks so pretty. I need to go out and it’s -3°c (here in my part of England) so I’ll definitely be wearing my hat!
It’s one of the few I’ve really liked. Probably because of the Color and the way you are wearing it. Why not on Ravelry?
That song! LOL Oh boy! Cute, cute, cute… cozy hat! It was a balmy 20 here this morning!
I do remember that song and now it’s going to be rolling around in my head. It’s pretty appropriate for the times. I have not knit a Musselburgh Hat. I think I bought Sarah’s pattern with similar construction so I plan to knit one or the other soon. If the hat keeps you warm in Michigan, it’s bound to be warm in Nebraska. The birds do go through the seed this time of year. Good luck keeping up.
