Today is Earth Day.
Let’s celebrate!
I’m planning to spend some time out in my garden today, happy to be starting a new season . . . of weeding and planting and moving things around . . . while always sporting my highly fashionable gardening attire. Things are happening a bit slower in my garden this year (it was a rough winter here), but spring is finally beginning to show up. The frogs are active in the pond, the larch is greening up, the hellebores are magnificent, the redbuds are just about to pop, and . . . so far . . . my “fence extensions” are working to keep the deer out.
Today, I’ll head out with my handy list of chores and . . . dig in! (See what I did there?) I’m also going to visit two of my favorite nurseries. I’m on the hunt for two new trees, and I always like to grab a new hellebore (or two or three) to celebrate spring and actually plant something on Earth Day. Maybe I’ll even find an irresistible pot of pansies for my porch (because aren’t all pansies irresistible?) (especially in the spring?)
I challenge you to get out and DO something earth-y today, too!
If you’re a gardener, you’re probably way ahead of me here. But if you’re not into gardening, there are plenty of ways you can join in the celebration, too. Maybe you’d like to find a pot of pansies (already planted even) for your porch or patio. You can get out and take a “spring observation” walk in your neighborhood or a nearby park or greenspace. You can sit outside with a cup of tea and listen to the birds – and even identify the birds you hear with the Merlin bird identification app. You can read an earth-friendly book (I always recommend anything by Margaret Renkl) or some poetry. You can take a personal field trip to visit a local botanical garden or arboretum — or even visit a local nursery center for inspiration (and earth-y smells).
There are so many ways to celebrate Earth Day!
Get outside today . . . and enjoy!
“Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.”
— Robin Wall Kimmerer
I will be out in the garden with my new gardening overalls!
Happy Earth Day! Around here we are planting warm weather annuals – sadly the pansies are just about spent 🌸
I have plans to head to Ryan’s to plant some more seeds in the garden (chard, turnips, and shallots). I’ve planted my new lime tree (the old one died) and I’m trying to bring my begonia tubers and mandevilla out of dormancy. Fingers crossed and Happy Earth Day!
Well, I’m workin’ today, so probably won’t get out much. But it’s Kate’s birthday and we ALWAYS do some “Earth Day Birthday” activity — usually that’s cleaning up all the trash that’s blown in/collected in the ravine over the winter — even if it’s not exactly on Earth Day.
Happy Earth Day, Kym! I will be out in the yard fertilizing shrubs, cleaning up beds, and enjoying the beautiful weather here. Of course, Boomer, my new little dog, will be supervising. He is, after all, in charge of the entire yard.
Have fun out there today! Thanks to Ruthie, I am outside a lot these days, at all hours. Even though I’m usually tired, I’ve discovered that I really enjoy the first-thing-in-the-morning trip outside because the urban noise is quiet but all the birds are greeting the day. And I’ve even spotted some more unusual birds in the neighborhood lately (two hawks in the same tree the other day and a goldfinch in my backyard).
Unfortunately I’m working all day today and I have a meeting after work, too. Fortunately, though, I celebrated Earth Day yesterday by doing some gardening and dahlia tuber prep. It feels good to be in the season again!
There will be weeding.
