Today is Earth Day.
Let’s celebrate!

I’m planning to spend some time out in my garden today, happy to be starting a new season . . . of weeding and planting and moving things around . . . while always sporting my highly fashionable gardening attire. Things are happening a bit slower in my garden this year (it was a rough winter here), but spring is finally beginning to show up. The frogs are active in the pond, the larch is greening up, the hellebores are magnificent, the redbuds are just about to pop, and . . . so far . . . my “fence extensions” are working to keep the deer out.

Today, I’ll head out with my handy list of chores and . . . dig in! (See what I did there?) I’m also going to visit two of my favorite nurseries. I’m on the hunt for two new trees, and I always like to grab a new hellebore (or two or three) to celebrate spring and actually plant something on Earth Day. Maybe I’ll even find an irresistible pot of pansies for my porch (because aren’t all pansies irresistible?) (especially in the spring?)

I challenge you to get out and DO something earth-y today, too!

If you’re a gardener, you’re probably way ahead of me here. But if you’re not into gardening, there are plenty of ways you can join in the celebration, too. Maybe you’d like to find a pot of pansies (already planted even) for your porch or patio. You can get out and take a “spring observation” walk in your neighborhood or a nearby park or greenspace. You can sit outside with a cup of tea and listen to the birds – and even identify the birds you hear with the Merlin bird identification app. You can read an earth-friendly book (I always recommend anything by Margaret Renkl) or some poetry. You can take a personal field trip to visit a local botanical garden or arboretum — or even visit a local nursery center for inspiration (and earth-y smells).

There are so many ways to celebrate Earth Day!
Get outside today . . . and enjoy!

“Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.”
