Next month, I’ll be turning 65. (Along with Barbie, by the way. We’ve grown up together!) To commemorate and celebrate this auspicious occasion (my birthday, not Barbie’s), I’ve started my own “deep dive” into the topic of . . . aging. Particularly, into aging well and how I might manage that on my own terms. I’ve been doing quite a lot of research . . . reading, watching, collecting, planning . . . and now I’m ready to take action. I am seriously motivated to . . . defy gravity; to live my best and most active/healthy life . . . for whatever’s left of my life.
And then I got thinking that maybe some of you might also be interested in this topic. So I’ve decided to share some of my findings in occasional blog posts. It’ll be kinda random — there won’t be a set schedule or certain days for “defying gravity” posts. They’ll just show up here every now and then.
What do you think?
(And if you think you’re too young for this topic, well . . . it’s never too early to prepare yourself for healthy aging. And if you’re way ahead of me here? Well, there are always new things to learn and new tricks to try.)
So.
Watch for future posts.
Let’s embrace getting older and defy some gravity . . . together!
“Aging is not ‘lost youth’ but a new stage of opportunity and strength.”
–Betty Friedan
Aging is a full time job 🤣I look forward to reading your thoughts and insights.
I’ll be 67 in a few months, so I may be interested in defying gravity. I’d like to learn about the details and specifics of what you mean, but gravity does have a pretty strong grip on me. Any efforts to defy it involve diclofenac, riding a stationary bicycle, and trying to find a good moisturizer.
We share a birthday month! I’ll be 70 in March. The hardest thought for me about aging is that there are less years ahead than there are behind me. I’ve tended to think like a teenager…that I’ll live forever. Hitting retirement age has been an eye opener. But I also feel lucky to have reached this age. Not everyone gets to.
I will be very interested in what you choose to share. I’m turning 68 this summer and am still working and my mom is still around at age 95. My interest/avoidance of this topic is strong.
Love the Friedan quote! Wow. This is a wide field. Yes, I wish I had done some better Bodily age-prepping (although my daily walks count for a Lot), but on the other hand we will get there soon enough (if we are lucky!) and I remember at 65 how I revelled in my energetic youthfulness (again lucky) and I didn’t want to miss out on that while looking too much ahead for things like thinning eyebrows (that will never happen to Me!) and other things no one ever expects (or has a cure for!) But yes, body and skin and strengthening a positive attitude. Looking forward to this, Kym! You always bring something new to a discussion that I often benefit from. (Which is why you are so good at this:).
I’m a bit beyond 65 (just a bit LOL) and I’d love to read what you come up with.
Great idea and I appreciate learning more about this now since I will turn 60 (!!!!!) next year. Whoa. That’s a sobering thought right there.
Aw, you are still a baby!! LOL I’m 70 and have been trying to age gracefully for some time now. I’ll enjoy reaping the benefits of your research by reading what you’ve found. A MAJOR key for me is to be positive, to find joy and love daily, to move (I’m really looking forward to more of that with my retirement!!) and to keep my brain active.
I will turn 70 in September and I want to live out my remaining years in the best way I possibly can, so, yes, I look forward to moving forward in a positive way! Turning 70 kind of shocks me, but I have a couple of friends who inspire me. They are turning 80 and are actively moving through life with grace and joy…that is how I want to live!
Yes, please!!
Turning 66 in April and I am eager to celebrate this part of my life! I keep reminding DH that part of how we age is determined by how we approach aging, and we need to do it with joy and optimism. It’s a practice!
I know I’m the outlier here by a couple decades, but I think it’s important to think about aging even when we’re “young.” I want to stay mentally young for a long time, even as I get biologically older, so while I may not be able to directly relate to your posts yet, I’m sure they’ll be useful to me down the line!
I’m 72 and 1/12th today. On one of my social media bios (which one??) I declare: “I’m old. You should be so lucky.” So, you go, girl! I’m always interested in the things you have to say, and one is never too old to learn.
Bring it on!!! 🙂
I agree with Patty… bring it on! Aging is a delight of life… I am not fighting it, but embracing it every single day! (this was not always the case… sigh)
Love this and look forward to seeing your posts about it too!
I think it is well to learn about aging. I’ve been thinking about it for a few years. One idea I keep in mind is an old but true adage, “Growing older is an honor that not everyone experiences.” I think about that when I feel like complaining about some age related concern. I look forward to reading about your discoveries.
I noticed a few months ago that I was starting to walk “old” — small steps, hunched over a little. So I started a walking program. Not a big deal, just walking from one end of the house to the other and back. 11 such laps = 1/4 mile 🙂 I haven’t been keeping up with it lately, and today I noticed that my balance is a little wacky. More walking to cure that!
Totally here for it, Kym! and happy early birthday!!
Well, I’ll be turning 74 a few weeks before you turn 65. I’m not sure how graceful I am (no makeup, to facial surgeries, and I live logo t-shirts. BUT, I don’t mind how old I look, maybe the graceful part is being comfortable with your body (no matter what society says) and happy that you can move and play, and keep up with your dog, and be happy reading a book all day (and going to the gym and walking said dog miles each day). 🙂 How old is old?
I’m on board!
