Welcome . . . to another Friday in the Sanctuary.
I hope you find a few moments of peace and respite here today. And maybe a moment of levity, too. Life is tough. We all need to protect our peace!
So c’mon in.
Shine your light!
First, let’s take a quick visit.
Come with me . . . to visit the women of Sandur on the island of Sandoy in the Faroese Archipelago . . . where we can see the most famous “yarn bombing” in all the world on the lake of Gróthúsvatn. On the island (where the sheep far outnumber the humans) (by a lot), tales of old claim that the lake of Gróthúsvatn is home to a witch. Every summer, to honor the legend of the witch, women from the village of Sandur come together to “yarn bomb” a massive rock by the lake, blanketing the rock . . . in knitting. Each year the motif changes, but it always centers around the tale of their legendary witch.
Then, let’s discover how an Amazonian lily pad . . . influenced architecture in Victorian England.
This obscure little story piqued my interest right away: exotic gardening . . . meets architecture! (I’ll bet you didn’t know I once wanted to be an architect when I grew up. It was not to be. And that’s a story for another day. Maybe.)
Next, I’ve got a recommendation.
Tom and I are in the midst of watching the newly-released Billy Joel documentary, And So It Goes, on HBO. (Yeah. I haven’t even seen the whole thing yet and I’m giving it a huge thumbs up.) I’m not a Billy Joel superfan or anything, but his music is woven – deeply – into my life. I’m going to bet it’s woven deeply into yours, too.
Check it out for yourself! It’s long, sure. But worth it. It’s very easy to just sit back and . . . enjoy.
Finally . . . here’s a bit of levity for you.
Later this month, Tom and I will celebrate our 44th wedding anniversary. (Which is kinda unbelievable to me. But there you go.) When I look back on the photos of our wedding, we look so . . . old-timey. Out of fashion. Very cringe. (Also very young.) So when I saw this little clip on Instagram, it made me laugh. And I’m going to bet it will make a lot of YOU laugh, too.
Because what goes around comes around, people!
And that’ll do it for this week, my friends.
I hope you’ve found some . . . sanctuary . . . here today. At least for a few minutes.
Enjoy the weekend.
Kick back a little.
Although it’s August now (already?), it’s still summer. Do some summer-y things. Quick! Before it’s winter again.
And above all . . . protect your peace.
Thank you, Kym. The heat dome has left us for a few days (back next week), so Boomer and I had a lovely early morning walk. I got to see the sunrise while feeling a lovely breeze, so my mood and peace are much improved. I enjoyed your post after coming back home. And I am recommending Leanne on Netflix to all the women I know. She has evidently been around a while, but she is new to me. I actually laughed out loud watching this show, and it felt so good.
Once again, thank you Kym
The Billy Joel documentary is just fantastic (I have yet to queue up episode two either.) But the windows are flung wide open… yes, that heat/humidity thing has momentarily departed (I think it will be back next week for us, so I am savoring these AC-free moments!) I love those Faroese women… so much! (and I am pretty sure wedding attire is all supposed to be cringe-worthy. Haha!)
Billy Joel was the soundtrack to big parts of my life; I wore out several cassette tapes of his in my car and one vinyl album of The Stranger played too much in 1977. I had to laugh when Ryan came home from middle school one day and asked if I had ever heard of Billy Joel. They were doing a history unit based on “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and there may have been one tiny moment that he thought I was cool because I could still sing most of the lyrics.
Today’s Sanctuary is a little vacation at the beginning of August. I actually think the cringe wedding video is true about fashion in general — things are of their time, and even the most beautiful, “classic” things will look silly to someone someday.
I was surprised to learn that Chuck would LIKE to watch the Billy Joel with me. Benefits of reading your blog over breakfast. We’ve been watching Dept Q this week. It is dark and gritty, funny but more gruesome than I like. We’re going to double up episodes in the next night or so before we go away for a few days with our daughter Sophie, her husband and his parents to a cabin on Puget Sound. I highly recommend it, if the darker side of Masterpiece Mystery is your thing.
Thanks and have a great weekend everyone!
I love those women knitting — their massive piece looks like a wonderful way to reuse old swatches and worn out pieces, and clearly they got a lot of delight out of the process. Also, I’d heard of the Crystal Palace but didn’t know anything about its origins, so thanks for that bit of history. I’m a bit of a Billy Joel superfan, so I’m really looking forward to that documentary.
Happy Weekend Kym and best wishes for your anniversary! – thank you for another peace-filled post … and another thumbs up for the Billy Joel documentary (Marc and I are superfans … and currently into Slow Horses and Shrinking before our Apple TV free promo turns into a pumpkin – I’m glad we have something to look forward to after those shows)
Have a great weekend! I’m not a Billy Joel super fan or anything but when I’m in the car and a song comes on, I don’t change the channel and I sing along. Christy Brinkley did a book signing at the independent book store I go to and I was tempted to go to it but timing didn’t work out.
Thanks Kym! For a second I thought she had one of my wedding pictures! 🙂 Happy weekend to you and Tom…40 family members here for a cookout today. About 15 over my comfort level!
Once again, great pieces Kym. Love the women knitting – that was so funny. And the giant lily and the Crystal Palace. So interesting! thank you.
That Billy Joel show is on our radar but we haven’t started it yet. Did you know I took piano lessons for over 10 years? HUGE fan of Billy Joel and his skills. Those wedding photos are hilarious and bring back so many memories. We thought we were so stylish, too! And damn right it’s still summer, I won’t let anyone rush me into fall.
