I’ve reached the point in the summer where I’m never quite sure whether I’m . . . coming or going!
I fully realize what great fortune it is to have a lake cabin retreat of my own. I used to dream of just disappearing up north for a month or two during the summer. But it really can’t work like that . . . with my life as it is . . . right now. (My garden. My dad. Grocery stores with fresh produce. Haircuts.) So back-and-forth we go! Five days up north. Two days at home. Four days up north. Two days at home. Rinse. Repeat.
It’s fun, but I have reached that point where I can’t remember . . . where I’m going to be when, and what I left where. Do we need oat milk up north? Or at home? (So, of course, we have plenty of oat milk in one location and zero oat milk in another.) I know. Not a problem. But it is a scramble!
Last night, I saw the sunset from my front porch. (Beauty emergency!) Tomorrow I’ll see the sunrise over the lake. (Beauty emergency!) It’s all good – and a great way to enjoy the summer.
Speaking of enjoying the summer . . . we’re nearing the end of the July, and that means it’s time for me to gather up your Summer Vibes Scavenger Hunt “findings.” Send me your July “results” by tomorrow – July 30 – to be included in this month’s point tally. (To make it easier, you can just include your stories in my comments, although if you want to send me photos, you’ll have to do that via email.) Watch for the July wrap-up post on Wednesday — and the August list on Thursday.
Here are links to the June and July lists. Remember . . . you can do anything on either list at any time during the summer. (But you only get credit for doing it once.)
ENJOY!
That coming and going problem… it might just be the best one ever to have!
So my July list is a bit better than June, but just barely.
I did manage to take a fantastic boat trip to the Scottish isle, Ivar (Thanks to Carys Davies Clear) and spent a bit of time there. It was fantastic and I loved it so much I went back for a second visit!
I after a bit of a Heat Hiatus, I have been able to get back out to my Summer Office where the delight of the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks distracts my morning in the best way. And out of all the birds this summer, the Hummingbirds have been the most delightful. Yesterday, I counted 12… yes a dozen… flitting about my enormous Butterfly Bush!
It has been eons since I ever went to a concert, but that did not stop me from queueing up The Wailin’ Jennies on the Sonos, cranking up the volume and singing along in my Kitchen Concert. These impromptu concerts have done something amazing… Make Dishwashing Fun Again!
We did have one spectacular sunset that qualified fully as a beauty emergency (I sent you the photo!)
I know and remember that coming and going feeling! we drove to MD almost every Sunday afternoon and drove back to NJ every Friday night. Neither place was a vacation home, but I was grateful we didn’t have to sell the house in NJ. I was not so grateful for spending much of the weekend taking care of tasks in NJ, and then doing it all again in MD once we were back there. Here’s hoping you get a chance to enjoy both home and up North, whenever and wherever you are!
I always wonder about this coming and going thing. I think I would always be wanting something that was at the other place 😂
Beauty emergencies are the best, non? I did bring flowers in (picture on my blog today). Your back and forth reminds me (different, but still reminds me) of summers when we would go to a camp (cabin/whatever) on a lake in VT. We spent a month there (my Mom, 3 brothers and me). My Dad would be with us for 3 of those week, so he did the back & forth. I loved that because I usually had ordered something from a cereal box (most often, a doll) that he would bring on his return trip! Thanks for nudging that memory out of hibernation!
Definitely a good problem to have (unless you happen to be at the place with no oat milk). The feeling you describe is a lot how I feel come December when we’re ready to head to my parents’ in Florida. What did I leave there the last time? What do I need to take versus what can I ask my mom to buy? In any case, wherever you are, enjoy it — make all the time you need for those beauty emergencies!
After having been away for just one week and feeling really glad to go home I can only imagine the confusion that must set in when you go back and forth frequently. It was definitely good to get home to my garden although YET ANOTHER woodchuck had wreaked havoc on the containers. That makes 4, in case you’ve lost count.
What a gorgeous beauty emergency. The coming and going must get a little unorganized, in spite of the best efforts. After all these years, I’m sure you have all of the best efforts. Of course I’d be most worried about my making and writing supplies.
Ooh…thanks for the reminder. Had quite the road trip up and down the eastern seaboard to visit friends on the 4th of July. An annual event that has become quite arduous these days. The number and size of giant trucks has tripled. Luckily the friends are delightful. There is a new brewery in town with outdoor seating of which we were happy to partake so Eating Outdoors. Not much of a beauty emergency, but on a walk recently a rogue Day Lily burst into view. Bright daffodil yellow, low to the ground, all by itself. Made my day. Sort of like discovering diamonds. (So that makes three checkmarks.)
There’s no place like home, but when you have two beautiful homes and enjoy them both. I can see the draw of a quiet place like the lake. (Big plus with beauty emergencies in both places!). I’d call it best of both worlds. Hope you get the oat milk problem evened out.
My sister and her husband divorced when their girls were little and they shared custody – alternating weeks – I remember that the girls had clothes at each house, but their shoes traveled with … and maybe that’s a good solution for the oat milk? or maybe that’s just my cow milk mindset because it can turn in day? Anyway …. 🙂 love the sunset – we’ve had NO color morning or evening in weeks … gosh I’m ready for fall….
I took a road trip to a family reunion in Arkansas and I brought some flowers inside. That’s it. I suck a these things.
