Well. The weather is sure . . . weird . . . this winter. At least, it is here in Michigan. We’ve no snow. And the temperature is going to be in the 50s today. Most Februarys, I look out at my garden and can only . . . dream. This February, though, I’m seriously needing to get at my weeding already! And I see buds – mostly hellebores – ready to pop. Which is exciting – but also disconcerting – because it is just too early for spring, and I know winter will return. (Based on the forecast, sometime next week. . . )

What to do about this different “flavor” of February blahs?

Tulips, of course!

Or, really, any type of blooming flowers. This month, I’ve picked up bunches of tulips at the grocery stores I visit. And I know they’re also available at Costco and Trader Joe’s. Floral shops carry them, too, and although lovely, they’re usually significantly more expensive than the ones you can find at your grocery store.

I have a couple of simple tips for you when you buy a bunch of tulips at the grocery store:

First, look for tight buds. I know we’re all drawn to the colors — but look for the bunch with tight buds. They’re fresher – and will last longer at home.

Next, when you get home, deal with your flowers right away. Fill a vase with cool-to-room temperature water. Unwrap the flowers and cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. Remove any leaves that look wonky or that will be below the water line of your vase. Then get those stems in the vase and hydrated as quickly as possible.

For best results, change the water and re-cut the stems daily. And keep them out of direct light – or away from a heat vent – if you can.

Fresh blooms are a perfect pick-me-up for these (weird) winter days!

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!
