Well. The weather is sure . . . weird . . . this winter. At least, it is here in Michigan. We’ve no snow. And the temperature is going to be in the 50s today. Most Februarys, I look out at my garden and can only . . . dream. This February, though, I’m seriously needing to get at my weeding already! And I see buds – mostly hellebores – ready to pop. Which is exciting – but also disconcerting – because it is just too early for spring, and I know winter will return. (Based on the forecast, sometime next week. . . )
What to do about this different “flavor” of February blahs?
Tulips, of course!
Or, really, any type of blooming flowers. This month, I’ve picked up bunches of tulips at the grocery stores I visit. And I know they’re also available at Costco and Trader Joe’s. Floral shops carry them, too, and although lovely, they’re usually significantly more expensive than the ones you can find at your grocery store.
I have a couple of simple tips for you when you buy a bunch of tulips at the grocery store:
First, look for tight buds. I know we’re all drawn to the colors — but look for the bunch with tight buds. They’re fresher – and will last longer at home.
Next, when you get home, deal with your flowers right away. Fill a vase with cool-to-room temperature water. Unwrap the flowers and cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. Remove any leaves that look wonky or that will be below the water line of your vase. Then get those stems in the vase and hydrated as quickly as possible.
For best results, change the water and re-cut the stems daily. And keep them out of direct light – or away from a heat vent – if you can.
Fresh blooms are a perfect pick-me-up for these (weird) winter days!
Have a lovely weekend, everyone!
Tulips are the perfect February pick me up! I just love how they look in a vase!
Happy Friday! XO
Beautiful! I wanted tulips but Target only had mums but they have brightened my outlook. We had rain yesterday with a bit of snow and then the temperature dropped and now we have very icy roads. Well everything is icy…even the grass. Hope you don’t get this weather!
I picked up a lovely bunch of yellowy-orange tulips y this week too. Strange winter weather here too.
I have enjoyed this last week with sunshine and warmer temperatures, but it is disconcerting and worrisome. I think I’ll be able to hang my laundry out today and have it dry with temps in the mid-50s but I don’t remember that ever happening in February before. But tulips are lovely in any weather. I like them when they’re tight buds and they’re equally lovely when they start to droop.
So pretty, and great tips!! A little gerbera daisy found its way into my kitchen recently… amazing what a little flower can do for a person. 😉
All flowers are great pick-me-ups I think. Flowers at Trader Joe’s – for me – are much, much cheaper than our grocery stores. For example, a bunch of flowers I can get at TJs for $4.99 was $12 in the grocery store last week! I also find that TJs flowers last much, much longer than anything I buy anywhere else! I think I’ll be going to TJs next week:)
I do love TJ’s flowers, so now that you’ve suggested it, I think I’ll try to get some this weekend. Tulips are always happy flowers, and I’ve got a vase that’s great for them because it works with their tendency to lean/bend over.
I love tulips! Thanks for the tips.
I just got home from Costco and all they had were roses and bouquets for Lunar New Year. I’ll bet next week they have tulips back again. 🙂 My hellebores are 3″ above the ground! I can tell they’re pink. spring!
The tulips are just lovely. You are so right about flowers as a way to lift the spirit. I almost bought some Thursday at Trader Joe’s and then I got distracted. However, there is always another trip to the grocery store.
Beautiful tulips. Enjoy!
I love tulip bouquets and treated myself to some last week. They got very droopy, though, and I’m not sure why. They weren’t in direct sunlight and I changed the water and cut them daily. I still enjoyed them but they didn’t look as lovely as they usually do.
My amaryllis blooms are done … I think it’s time for tulips!
