Because sometimes Mondays are for trips down . . .
My most recent trip down Memory Lane started on Saturday — when Tom came home from the hardware store with this . . .
Yeah.
They still make it — and sell it by the piece!
Who knew?
When you open it up . . .
It still looks pretty much the same. Same lame comic featuring Bazooka Joe and his gang. Same lame fortune. But the bubble gum is . . . not quite the same. I mean, it’s still pink. But a different pink. And it’s still rock hard. But it doesn’t have that lengthwise “divide” anymore. It still tastes . . . like bubblegum. It still gives your jaws quite a workout. And it still loses its flavor just as fast (maybe even faster) as you remember it did!
Although I’m not a gum-chewer any more, when I was a kid I loved gum. And especially bubble gum! And, yeah. I was one of thse kids who always got in trouble at school for chewing gum. Why? Because I couldn’t put a piece of gum in my mouth without blowing/popping bubbles! So I always drew teacherly attention to myself.
Some things never change.
(It is very tricky to take a selfie of yourself blowing bubbles.)
How about you? Were you a gum-chewing, bubble-blowing kid? Or not so much? And if you liked gum, what was your favorite kind?
Well… talk about a blast from the past! Haha! I had no clue they still sold Bazooka gum any longer! I had a steep learning curve on the bubble blowing (I was that kid who tried and was more than likely to spit the gum at you in my attempt!) I did eventually “get it” but my fascination with bubble gum was short-lived, thankfully!
Ha…a blast from the past! I did chew plenty of Bazooka, but your post made me think about those Concord grape dubble bubble gum balls. The smell, the gritty texture until you got them broken down. I just looked and you can get them on Amazon….a whole bag’s worth.
But I won’t.
Yes, I loved chewing gum as a kid! I can still almost smell that bubble gum scent, and you’re right about it being a different pink now. My sister and I used to see who could blow the biggest bubble, and she probably won but she was also the one who had to get gum cut out of her hair. I also loved Fruit Stripe gum and making gum wrapper chains. Thanks for a fun little skip down memory lane!
Loved Bazooka, loved blowing bubbles but I’ve never been much of a gum chewer. I can certainly still remember that smell!
Definitely a blast from the past! Hahaha Yes, I was a bubblegum fan and yes, I could blow bubbles. I loved that stuff. I also loved Doubllemint gum and making the gum wrapper chains that Bonny mentioned (I had not thought about those in years!).
I did chew gum as a kid … a lot of it Bazooka, but my favorite gum was Clark’s Teaberry.
What fun! I chewed some gum as a kid but not a lot. It took me awhile to learn how to blow bubbles. It was one of my older siblings who told me how to do it. Juicy Fruit was my favorite gum but I did chew Bazooka too. Thanks for the memories!
I’m definitely a bubble-blower. Loved Bazooka & Juicy Fruit (my grandpa’s favorite). Funny, I was just thinking about sweets — candy & bakery, mostly (which, to me, includes gum) — and how different it is from when we were kids. I mean, it’s sweet and there’s still nougat, caramel & peanuts covered by chocolate in a Snickers, for instance, but it’s different. I blame it all on high-fructose corn syrup.
I loved those cheapo, powdery sticks of gum that came in my brother’s baseball card packs. It was the smell, really, more than anything else. (Just thinking about Bazooka, Dubble Bubble, all of that–makes my teeth hurt!)
I remember the workout my jaw used to get from Bazooka! I much preferred Bubblicious gum because it was soft and I could actually blow bubbles with it. When I was in elementary or middle school, I once won a giant container of Dubble Bubble gum because I guessed how many pieces were in it as part of a raffle — and I’m pretty sure I lost my taste for bubble gum for a while after that!
I always suspected that Bazooka Joe was a criminal hiding in plain sight, since he wore his turtleneck so high on his face … but I did like bubble gum. We didn’t get bubble gum or chewing gum much, because my mother could not stand the sound of chewing and even worse someone cracking their gum! So it was an extremely occasional treat, and never at home.
I liked gum a lot as a kid and still kind of do but I very rarely actually chew gum these days. My favorite for blowing bubbles was Hubba Bubba in the grape flavor. For regularly chewing, I was a Double Mint of Big Red fan. The Bazooka brings back memories of lousy flavor and a sore jaw!
Ha! Oh! I am a gum chewer all the way! Bubble gum or any other kind of gum! Of course I am writing this after a trip to the dentist to have a filling replaced, so not really a gum chewing day…but this is the exception! Great bubbles!
My Grandmother kept a cookie jar full of candy and Bazooka Bubble Gum. My sibs and I blew a lot of bubbles and I recall a few times my brother popped our bubbles so we had gum all over our faces. I liked gum and those gum wrapper chains that Bonny mentioned. My Dad took us to a magazine and cigar store that sold life savers and gum. I liked Black Jack and Juicy Fruit.
Juicy Fruit…all the way. And Grape jawbreakers???…..e-e-w-w-w. I knew grape was a super-popular flavor so always kinda-sorta thought of myself as the anti-kid. But I loved Snickers and had a passing relationship with Tootsie Rolls so I wasn’t a complete rebel. Chloe
oh what fun! I was not a gum-chewing kid (ugh, for my mom, gum-chewing was just … not) but I was definitely a huge gum-chewing adult. I think the bubble thing had passed by the time I started. I don’t chew it as much anymore, but I do still have it handy!
