One morning, we decided to visit another little village in The Cotwolds, so we hired a taxi and had the most charming – and attractive – taxi driver (who will forever be known as The Hot Taxi Driver now) drive us 40 miles to Bibury. When he dropped us off, The Hot Taxi Driver agreed to pick us up in 2 hours.
Will that be enough time for us to explore Bibury? I asked.
Assuredly, he replied.
And The Hot Taxi Driver was right. Two hours in Birbury was perfect!
Bibury is a much smaller village than Stow-on-the-Wold, and there wasn’t as much exploring to be had there – 2 hours gave us plenty of time for nice walk-around and a lovely lunch at The Trout Farm. And . . . what a perfectly charming little village it was! I felt like I had stumbled onto the set of one of the British TV shows you can find on BritBox.
Bibury has the River Coln – full of brown trout, I hear – flowing through its center. (The Coln is a tributary to the Thames.) It is also home to Arlington Row, one of the more picturesque rows of Cotswold cottages in England. Originally built in the 14th century, the Arlington Row cottages were built as a wool store (to store the wool, not a shop). Later, in the 17th century, they were converted into weaver’s cottages. Wool was washed there, and hung out to dry on racks. (There are wool stories everywhere in The Cotswolds.) Now, people live in the cottages . . . and contend with tourists traipsing by all day with their cameras pointed at their windows and doors and roofs. (I imagine they know what they’re in for when they move in. . . )
There is also a lovely church in the village – the Church of England Church of Saint Mary – and this one was open and welcoming to visitors. I love popping into churches and cathedrals, so this was a treat.
I’ve put together a little gallery of Bibury-In-Two-Hours for you. You can click on any of the photos below, and the gallery will (should) pop up and you can scroll through my photos of Bibury and visit “vicariously.” (No photos of The Hot Taxi Driver, though. Sorry.)
Enjoy!
Looks like you had nice weather for you wandering. Love the photo gallery.
Oh, how lovely. And spring is springing!!
That really is a charming little village and the sign for the dogs is priceless!
Such lovely photos! Thank you for sharing. I love the trout above the bell and the photo of the beautiful stream
I was just wondering if you rented a car and if so, how that worked for you and if not, how you got around. And now I know!
This is unbelievably charming!
It really does look like a film set! So charming. And I love the request that dogs not foul the churchyard!
What delightful fun, Kym! I think your photos are just fantastic. And sunshine and blue skies are a double treat! (every time I have visited England, rain was our most constant companion!!)
What a beautiful place. I love the stone walls and (like Erika) the trout above the bell. How was your lunch at The Trout Farm? The Church is beautiful.
What a charming place to visit. Your photos are lovely.
Well, isn’t this the most perfect Cotswold village ever!? I sure hope all the dogs in Bibury can read.
